Description

The International Association for Forensic Psychotherapy

19th Annual Conference

Tales of Transgression

Narratives in Forensic Psychotherapy

Keble College, Oxford, England

25th – 27th March 2009

Welcome to the 19th Annual IAFP Conference. The theme of this year’s conference is the importance of narrative and story in the lives of forensic patients and other offenders.

Forensic patients are surrounded by descriptions of their transgressions, from depositions and psychiatric court reports, to police statements and newspaper articles outlining sensationalist accounts of their crimes. Once engaged in therapy further narratives emerge, including their own accounts of their motivations, histories, reasons and fantasies, and the therapists’ expositions of the offences, and of the tale of therapy itself. Visual narratives may emerge many forms, including artwork, self-harm scarification, photographs of the offender’s victims and become one aspect of the complex picture of the trajectory of transgression. Dramatic reconstructions, repeated enactments and serial offences act out these destructive narratives. Somewhere within the narrative structure truth and fantasy converge and one of the tasks of the forensic psychotherapist is to disentangle these and uncover the meaning at the heart of an offence, distorted and violent as it might be. The conflicting narratives of expert witnesses and miscarriages of justice are among the topics we will address.

PRE-CONFERENCE PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME

THURSDAY MARCH 25 TH 2010

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP:

Applying the Work of Isabel Menzies Lyth to forensic settings: Current Developments

The work of the late Isabel Menzies Lyth (1917-2008), the distinguished psychoanalyst and social scientist, has continued to have a profound influence on the practice of care by informing our understanding of the tremendous emotional impact on staff working in mental health and other institutional settings.

Her insights are very much alive in current research, and have great relevance for practice in forensic settings. This pre conference workshop aims to draw on her ideas, and the experience of participating members, to provide illustrations of the defences and difficulties that arise in the complex tasks of treatment within forensic organisations.
