CRISIS CENTRE

CLINICAL DIRECTOR

£ 65,000 pro rata

(Plus £ 5,000 expenses)

Due to the expected retirement in December 2008 of Dr. Joseph Berke, the founder and current Director, the Centre will appoint a Clinical Director to take over from Dr. Berke in October 2008. It is anticipated that there will be a handover period of three months for this important transition to take place.

Founded in 1973, the Arbours Crisis Centre has an established international reputation as a unique psychosocial residential facility for the severely emotionally disturbed individuals and families. The Centre functions as a small therapeutic community applying psychoanalytic principles to its structures and practise.

This post represents an exciting opportunity for an energetic, experienced senior clinician and manager to contribute to the Centre through the clinical leadership of a creative therapeutic staff group. The Director will also be responsible for the strategic vision for the future development of the Crisis centre.

Interested applicants should submit their CVs, preferably with three references, to Dr. Joseph Berke, 5 Shepherd’s Close, London N6 5AG (e-mail: jhberke@aol.com). Informal visits to the Centre are encouraged. Please contact Evonne Cameron-Phillips or Cate Potter, Joint Centre Managers on tel. no: 020 8350 8125 (e-mail: info@arbourscentre.org.uk). The closing date for applications is 11th April 2008 and interviews are expected to be held in early May.

The Ashburn Clinic Dunedin, New Zealand

Psychiatrist

It's not easy finding the right job in psychiatry. One where the environment supports good medical practice with time to assess and treat patients in depth. Where there is an opportunity to exercise the full range of psychiatric skills including psychotherapy. Where the comfortable physical facilities are complemented by beautiful, peaceful grounds and the expert staff group are excellent to work with.

Perhaps you feel that you are not involved in decision making in your current position or you don't have the say to treat patients in the way you think best. Maybe you feel that the in-patient milieu you work in is too pressured and without a coherent therapeutic programme. You might like to have a variety of clinical practice from residential, through day-patient to out-patient settings with interesting and challenging clinical problems.

Our work is hard but enjoyable. We are an expert team functioning in a unique and enabling atmosphere, with wide teaching, supervising and consulting opportunities. The Ashburn Clinic has been providing something special for patients for well over a century and has a deserved national reputation for excellent treatment.

Dunedin is arguably New Zealand's most liveable city. It is an ideal location for outdoor pursuits and also has excellent cultural and educational facilities for those who choose to stay either short or long term. Dunedin is also the gateway to the limitless recreational opportunities of Central Otago. A house can be provided with this position.

Therapeutic Care Workers £20,000 p.a. incl. sleep-ins

Trainee Therapeutic Care Workers £15,000 p.a.

Full time 40 hours per week plus sleep-ins.

West Sussex, Littlehampton outskirts (Brighton 15 miles)

The Amicus Community is a new and innovative therapeutic residential project for severely emotionally troubled children between the ages of seven to eleven. Through two affiliated family sized homes, based in the community, it aims to care and work with children who are unable to manage or be managed within normal families whether birth, adoptive or foster. At the same time their young age and emotional vulnerability will make large traditional children’s homes unsuitable and inappropriate.

We are dedicated to staff development through an extensive programme of supervision and training both in-house and externally, as well as taking seriously the work-life balance, which is seen as vital if we are to maximise both staff efficiency and longevity.

We are looking for experienced workers who would be excited by the challenge of joining the project.

YES, Asclepion does still exist…

…..I happily told a care manager who had contacted me via an ex-colleague about making a referral to the therapeutic community. At least she had already heard of Asclepion – that was heartening.

This is just one of the difficulties of helping to run a small TC – the need to get the service known and, perhaps even harder, to keep it in everyone’s mind when they are looking for suitable supported accommodation. But the service has survived since 1986 so we must be doing something right. More importantly, most tenants who use the service leave to live in more independent accommodation and this must be one measure of success.

So how to get talked about? The way we are striving to do this is to provide a high quality service that funders regard as good value and are prepared to pay for. Of course staff are key to this (if I say so myself as the Supported Housing Manager) but, in a small TC, of vital importance is the Board of Trustees.

….and Asclepion is in need of Trustees.

Staff members receive independent supervision on the day-to-day running of the TC but are also in direct communication with Trustees. This is mainly through Board meetings but also less formally. The potential for this to positively and quickly influence service delivery can be very satisfying for everyone. If a better way of doing things is identified this can become practice without the strain of trying to implement it via several layers of bureaucracy. Trustees get to know about how their decisions affect the tenants so their role is less remote than on boards of larger organisations.

Small can be beautiful as a small TC can respond to change more easily than a large one – with the right guidance.

The work of Trustees will not be limited to the current service. Asclepion is aware of the need to expand to reduce risk and take advantage of economies of scale. This will present exciting possibilities for Trustees in helping to identify and specify a new service.

For these reasons we need people with experience of therapeutic communities to help manage and improve the current service and to identify where need exists including what funders are prepared to pay for.

Board Meetings are held in the evening, in Central London, every two months. There are occasional ad hoc meetings. The position of Trustee is unpaid except for all expenses.

Background

Asclepion currently manages a shared house for five people in Wandsworth, S.W. London as a therapeutic community. It has evolved since it was established in 1986 but tenants have always been active in the day-to-day running of the house through the House Meeting. Tenants must be committed to using the twice-weekly group therapy sessions. This may not sound any different from other TCs but because tenants need to be relatively independent in domestic “survival skills” at the time of referral they are able to concentrate on identifying the changes they wish to make in their lives when using the group process. The Group Therapist and the Supported Housing Manager visit the house rather than being based there so tenants need to use their own or the group’s resources. There is an on-call system for emergencies but again tenants are encouraged to use the back-up services in the wider community. This is obviously good practice for independent living.
